Slippage
When I was in art school there was a professor who had this saying: "You can't afford slippage." The advice was so easily quotable that it became a sort of a catchphrase that the students would echo to one another within the painting department. Perhaps in jest or perhaps sincerely. At the time I wasn't even sure what it really meant.
This edict has lived in the back of my mind for decades now. Although I think the professor was talking about the artist's intention, I'm more interested in the poetic application of the word. How certain images can drift into abstraction, or vice versa. What happens to a word when you repeat it over and over. How recurring motifs can shift and take on new meaning with each reprise.
